Memory in Older Adults is Improved by Electric Brain Stimulation

In order to keep us fully functional for longer and prevent dementia and disorders like Alzheimer's, scientists are attempting to address the fact that our memory tends to deteriorate with age due to a rapidly aging global population.

According to a recent study, modest, non-invasive electrical stimulation delivered through an electrode-equipped cap may be sufficient to counteract the negative effects of aging and maintain the health and strength of our memory circuits.

Technically, it's known as transcranial alternating current stimulation, or tACS, and it is considered to function by synchronizing our brain waves.

In tests were out by researchers at According to research from Boston University, just 20 minutes of stimulation per day was sufficient to cause 2 different types of memory function to noticeably increase over the course of at least a month.

This could lead to new treatments for memory issues as well as ways to keep our minds active as we age with further study.

The findings "demonstrate that the plasticity of the aging brain can be selectively and sustainably exploited utilizing recurrent and highly focalized neuromodulation," the researchers write in their recently published report.

Here's what the researchers did: In a series of studies, 150 people aged 65 to 88 received electrical brain stimulation for 20 minutes each day for four straight days. They were additionally requested to pay attention to and five lists, each with 20 words.

Two separate brain regions were targeted with various frequencies based on prior studies.

Working memory, or the capacity to remember information in the short term, is demonstrated by the improvement in recall of words towards the end of lists following stimulation of the inferior parietal lobule of the brain at a frequency of 4 Hz (like the platform number your train is leaving from).

It was discovered that individuals remembered words at the beginning of the lists better after 60 Hz dorsolateral prefrontal cortex stimulation, demonstrating an enhancement in long-term memory. Being able to recall where you parked your car at the airport following a trip is an illustration of long-term memory.

The biggest and most sustained gains in memory recall were seen in those who performed cognitively poorly before to the stimulation treatment.

The neuroscientist Tara Spires-Jones of the University of Edinburgh told The Guardian that the research was "promising" and demonstrated how versatile and agile the brain is.

Spires-Jones pointed out that the participants' unique word-list task might not be typical of daily activities.

We also don't yet know whether people with memory impairment brought on by a brain disorder can benefit from this form of stimulation and brain training, and this topic was left unaddressed in this study.

Researchers can investigate that further and possibly examine how the remedy might work in the future.

a sickness that adversely impacts 55 million people globally and causes the brain to degenerate more quickly than would be anticipated from biological aging.

Even though it's still early, this is a promising beginning because the technology is non-invasive, quick to apply, and lasts for at least a month in addition to improving both short-term and long-term memory recall.

Cognitive neuroscientist Shrey Grover of Boston University said in a statement to Nature, "We're hoping that we can build on this work in important ways and contribute additional knowledge about how the brain functions."

The study was released in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

FolisinHair Loss

Folisin

Folisin is a product for hair loss in men. To create the recipe of the food supplement, as many as 13 ingredients were used that inhibit baldness, support hair growth and have a positive effect on the condition of the scalp, creating the perfect environment for new hair growth. Importantly, all the ingredients used to create the tablets are safe for the body and do not cause side effects.

Folisin food supplement provides the body with a number of important nutrients, the deficiency of which is one of the causes of hair loss. Regular use of the supplement counteracts this process and supports hair regrowth in places where they have already fallen out, such as the bend or the top of the head. In addition, Folisin helps maintain optimal blood testosterone levels and has a positive effect on pigmentation, allowing you to maintain the natural color of your hair.
